The Value Of Practical Philosophy

by Andrew

I’ve always enjoyed thinking.  Maybe you were the same way but as a child I was never bored and I was, honestly, quite vexed by the idea.  Bored?  As in you don’t have anything to do, think about, make, imagine, or explore?  How utterly perplexing that must be.  As we go through school we more often than not get the curiosity and the desire to learn educated right of us.  The joy of sitting and thinking quickly gets overrun by busyness, bills, and the babble of life in the fast lane.  That or life kicks in and we don’t have room in our heads for thinking about deep thoughts like consciousness, being, God, universal laws, life, death, love, happiness and meaning.  Our minds are full with the stress of raising kids, providing for family, maintaining and growing a career not to mention all the pain, heartache, and wanderings we go through.  Who has time or energy to think about stuff that doesn’t have bearing on day to day life?

And that’s precisely what I aim to do with this blog.  Dissect and distill the thoughts, ponderings and philosophy of all those great minds that have gone before us.  There is more than enough crappy philosophy out there to last a dozen lifetimes.  We only have one and barely any time as it is.  What can we learn that will make a difference in our day to day?  What can answer our deepest questions about life, God, meaning and the universe?  I obviously don’t aim to answers those questions but perhaps there are tools we can use to uncover meaning for ourselves?  From Socrates to Spinoza, Cato to Emerson, we can find tools, ideas, and theories that just may help us to live more peaceful and less cluttered lives.

Stay tuned!  There’s more to come.
